Download Full Spectrum Warrior (PC: 2004) for Free

Another free game sponsored by in-game advertising. This time it’s Full Spectrum Warrior and you can find it at filefront. I believe I played a demo back in the day, and the gameplay is similar to that of a Ghost Recon or S.W.A.T. type of gameplay. I believe the game was originally developed as a training program for the armed forces then glitzed up a bit for the retail version. Metacritic gave it an 80 out of 100 based on 26 reviews and users gave it a 8.0 out of 10. Sounds like a good game.

Full Spectrum Warrior is based on a game commissioned by the U.S. Army to train light Infantry troops in urban combat situations. Soldiers are placed in a tense, hostile, and claustrophobic environment where they must complete a variety of military objectives. Players act as the Squad Leader, providing direction to Alpha and Bravo fire teams. The successful Squad Leader effectively uses cover in the environment and moves his fire teams in a coordinated fashion so they can protect themselves from possible attacks that could come from any direction. Full Spectrum Warrior puts you in the dirt with your men, where danger lurks around every corner.

Download Area 51 (PC: 2005) for Free

author-drew- October 5, 2008

I’ve seen a slew of games released in full that are now sponsored by advertising. I decided I’d start posting them here if people were interested. I’ve downloaded Area 51 by Midway, but I haven’t tried it yet. Download it yourself, here, if you’re interested. Metacritic rates it a 67 based on 27 reviews, and users gave it a 7.1 out of 10. Not perfect, but the price is right.

The U.S. Army has received a distress signal from Area 51 where a viral outbreak has just shut down the research facility and the automated quarantine procedures have locked all scientific and military personnel inside. A small Special Forces unit including Specialist Ethan Cole of the HAZMAT (hazardous materials) Division is sent to investigate.

This is a full version of the game with no time expiration sponsored by advertising.

The World’s Most Disgusting Apartment is in Houston

Ish. It’s hard to fathom people can live in such a state. I know that I take longer than I should in packing up the dishwasher or even cleaning the cat box (sorry Cleo), but come on now. This is disgusting…

How and When to Cancel a Credit Card

author-drew- September 19, 2008

Although I don’t visit it often, I’m a fan of Get Rich Slowly. They recently wrote an article giving advice and background information on what exactly happens when you close a credit card.

Pros and cons of canceling a credit card
On the surface, closing an unused credit card account seems like a no-brainer. It’s not. Closing a credit card account may actually hurt your credit score on two levels.

1. The longer you’ve had an account, the more weight it carries. That’s part of the “length of credit history” slice in the pie chart above.
2. The “amounts owed” slice represents the balance and burden of your credit, how much of your available credit you use. Say you have two cards, both with $5,000 limits. You’re carrying a $2,000 balance on one of the cards, or about 20% of your total available credit. If you close the unused card, you’ll then be using 40% of your available credit, and your “utilization ratio” will jump, giving a temporary ding to your credit score.

Although I myself hate having 6 or seven credit accounts open, I plan to close them very slowly starting with the “youngest” accounts first. I’ll always have a mortgage, so I’m hoping the weight of its payment history will serve my credit well.

Wow, I just looked it up, and I’ve been doing the debt snowball for over 21 months now. Looking back at where I was then versus where I am now, I can proudly say the [payment] snowball is growing, effectively reducing my overall debt!
